After the global success of RRR, Ram Charan has been riding a wave of immense popularity. His next step comes in the form of Peddi, a rooted sports drama that positions him as a rugged, small-town athlete navigating ambition, identity, and recognition. But as audiences poured in, the conversation quickly shifted away from its scale and star power. Peddi is now trending heavily online, not for its performances or storytelling, but for all the wrong reasons. The controversy stems from specific portions involving the actress’s character, Achiamma, played by Jahnavi Kapoor, being objectified. And now, director Buchi Babu Sana has addressed the same.
On X, Buchi Babu Sana, the movie's director, issued a detailed apology, stating that cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect, but never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. He acknowledged that certain scenes were perceived as objectifying and apologized sincerely, and also confirmed that modifications will be made to the concerned portions as the theatrical run continues.
"After reviewing the feedback, we have decided to make changes to the concerned portions. Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities," he wrote.
He further emphasized that every woman deserves respect, dignity, and meaningful representation, noting that storytellers must remain attuned to evolving audience perspectives. The statement marked a rare instance of a filmmaker publicly accepting criticism without deflection, also signalling a willingness to adapt even after release.
That tension between controversy and ambition feeds directly into the film’s larger narrative.
Peddi blends sports drama with a story of identity and recognition
Peddi is a rooted sports drama set in a remote, unrecognized village in the Vizianagaram district called Kondakinda Ooru. Around 450 families live there without basic amenities, and even passing trains do not stop. Ram Charan plays Peddi Pehelwan, a gifted cricketer and wrestler who earns money through local matches.
His talent makes him a local hero but also attracts rivalry and resentment. Peddi falls in love with Achchiyamma, the daughter of a local politician played by Rao Ramesh. Their relationship unfolds against the backdrop of the village’s long struggle for recognition.
A major thread involves Appala Suri, played by Jagapathi Babu, who has spent nearly three decades fighting for a railway stop. A tragic turning point shifts Peddi’s outlook, pushing him to realize that personal success could bring visibility to his entire community. The story ties ambition to collective dignity.
What do you think about the director altering Peddi after the backlash and its impact on the film’s box office run? Let us know in the comments.
