The search for the next James Bond has inspired years of debate, and surprisingly, both Piers Morgan and Idris Elba share concerns about making the choice overly political. Although the Luther star was once a fan-favorite contender, he repeatedly dismissed the rumors. Elba also argued that casting should prioritize the best actor rather than identity-driven discussions.
Piers Morgan responded positively to a post by Variety on X discussing Idris Elba’s British GQ interview, where the actor dismissed ongoing James Bond casting speculation as unrealistic. Elba argued that the character was created within specific parameters and that fan-casting often ignores audience resistance to a Black British or African actor in the role.
“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” Idris Elba stated during the interview. Piers Morgan echoed approval, replying with “Well said, Mr. Elba” and clapping emojis.
The stance aligns with earlier comments from someone in the franchise itself, Ana de Armas. Armas famously rejected the idea of a female James Bond in interviews with The Sun. She argued that Hollywood should avoid reshaping established characters for diversity optics. Instead, she suggested creating original roles for women and actors of color within the franchise ecosystem.
While Morgan himself is not a part of the franchise itself, he still has a vested interest in keeping the originality of James Bond.
Piers Morgan's ongoing interest in the next James Bond
Piers Morgan has long treated James Bond as a cultural relic rather than a flexible invention, frequently defending the hyper-masculine framework established by Ian Fleming. Across televised debates and editorial commentary, he positions the character as untouchable. His broader media persona often frames reinterpretation as erosion rather than evolution, particularly in discussions about casting and identity.
Previously, on a live ITV Good Morning Britain segment, Morgan reacted sharply to Pierce Brosnan’s endorsement of a female James Bond. He dismissed the suggestion as performative cultural signaling and claimed it would end the franchise. Morgan argued that altering Bond’s foundational traits would collapse its mythos and audience trust.
A separate Daily Mail opinion column by Piers Morgan rejected the idea of a gay James Bond as incompatible with the franchise’s tone. His stance was echoed in his 2018 verified X controversy involving Daniel Craig and a baby-carrier image, reinforcing a recurring theme of resistance to modern reinterpretations as the 007 debate continues.
