Ever since Project Hail Mary rocketed onto screens, audiences worldwide have been utterly captivated by Andy Weir's gripping tale of interstellar survival and unlikely friendships. The novel's mind-bending science, Ryland Grace's desperate solo mission, and especially Rocky, the quirky, spider-like alien ally, have sparked endless fascination, and the universe has hooked millions. Now, audiences can dive into this world in a more immersive way than even 70mm IMAX.
Project Hail Mary is blasting off from its cinematic triumph straight into virtual reality, with a thrilling VR game announced to capitalize on the buzz. Titled Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, this mixed-reality adventure from Maze Theory will launch later in 2026, exclusively on Meta Quest 3/3S and Pico 4 headsets, with additional platforms to be determined.
The game immerses players as lone astronaut Ryland Grace. Building on Andy Weir's blockbuster novel and its hotly anticipated film, the game dives into an original, untold chapter after the Hail Mary mission. Players partner with the iconic alien Rocky to troubleshoot a crippled spaceship.
Hands-on zero-gravity repairs in the cockpit and science-packed puzzles blend astrophysics and engineering, all enhanced by passthrough mixed reality for seamless real-world integration. This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie, as per creator and writer Andy Weir.
While the VR game expands the universe with new adventures, the film itself has continued to dominate at the box office.
Project Hail Mary shatters box office records
Project Hail Mary's big-screen adaptation has shattered expectations, raking in over $429 million worldwide since its March 2026 debut, cementing its status as a sci-fi juggernaut. Ryan Gosling's turn as the witty, resourceful Ryland Grace, paired with stunning IMAX visuals of cosmic perils and alien encounters, propelled a $141 million opening weekend, topping Dune: Part Two's launch.
Project Hail Mary, riding its massive box office success into a dedicated VR game, shows how the story is expanding across media. The film’s record earnings and critical acclaim have created perfect momentum for the immersive Journey Among the Stars experience, letting fans step into Ryland Grace’s boots alongside Rocky.
