In a twist as intriguing as his own mystique, Michael Stipe has already named Billie Eilish as his ideal on-screen counterpart for a hypothetical R.E.M. biopic. The remark surfaced during an appearance with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“She’s amazing,” Stipe told Stephen Colbert, praising Eilish’s presence and noting that both artists share the same eye color. He added that her artistic depth aligns with the emotional candor that defined R.E.M.’s catalog. The exchange underscored Stipe’s admiration while keeping the tone disarmingly casual.

Stipe also recounted a fleeting encounter in Manhattan, where Eilish once held a door open for him at a restaurant. He admitted he did not recognize her at the time, only realizing her identity later. In fact, he was not sure if Eilish even knew who he was.

But before Eilish was mentioned, a few names had already been playfully thrown in. Colbert suggested David Cross, Timothée Chalamet, and J. K. Simmons. Stipe, however, had earlier insisted the role should go to someone who has a certain characteristic, and for him, Billie Eilish has that panache.
