Polarized reviews only reinforced Gervais’ habit of converting criticism into commentary.

Sykes promised to thank God and the trans community if Mortality won, then followed through precisely. The joke inverted Gervais’ public atheism and directly addressed backlash from earlier specials like SuperNature, reclaiming the spotlight as commentary rather than celebration.

It looks like Gervais took the jab in stride. It seems he may have responded calmly, reposting his win from home in the United Kingdom, claiming his fifth Golden Globe.
