“By the way, there’s no group pettier than actors, so it’s not surprising,” Lowe said.

Rob Lowe did not give specifics, but the incident likely unfolded during the 2002 SAG Awards. Lowe was accepting the drama ensemble prize on behalf of The West Wing. Behind him, Bradley Whitford seemed to be teasing Allison Janney, playfully distracting her while she tried to maintain composure.

In the same interview with Variety, Rob Lowe spoke passionately about Hollywood’s shifting landscape. He described the exodus of film and television production from Los Angeles to cheaper cities as a staggering loss for the industry. 

He criticized the allocation of budgets, noting that much of the tax credit goes above the line. Lowe explained that salaries for actors, writers, directors, and producers consume a disproportionate share. He argued the trend threatens Hollywood’s creative core, calling it a decision that borders on criminal negligence.

Rob Lowe highlighted how other regions reward above-the-line costs, leaving Los Angeles at a disadvantage. He noted that without such incentives, major productions continue fleeing, threatening Hollywood’s creative dominance. 

Using new tax breaks, Lowe stayed in Los Angeles to shoot The Musical, a zany comedy about spite, ambition, and chaos. The film’s absurdity underscores the frustrations Lowe sees in the industry, showing why he critiques both the system and Hollywood’s ego-driven actors.
