Robert Downey Jr. has pushed back against the growing conversation that social media influencers are becoming the next generation of Hollywood stars, recently questioning how internet fame is increasingly & quickly being bracketed with traditional movie stardom.

“When I hear people talk about, ‘Oh, the stars of the future are going to be influencers,’ I go, ‘I don’t know what world you’re living in, but I think that that is absolute horse****,’” Robert Downey Jr. said during an appearance on the Conversations for Our Daughters podcast.

The Iron Man actor reflected on how drastically fame has evolved over the years, pointing out how easily accessible celebrity culture has become. At the same time, Robert Downey Jr. clarified that he does not necessarily see influencers negatively, describing many content creators he has met while promoting films as “grounded, accomplished, cool people.”

Despite his criticism of influencer-driven celebrity culture, Robert Downey Jr. also acknowledged how audience engagement has fundamentally changed in the digital age. Recalling the early promotion of Iron Man, he spoke about Jon Favreau tweeting live from Comic-Con and realizing audiences now want to feel directly connected to the franchises they follow online.

Robert Downey Jr.’s remarks come at a time when the entertainment industry itself is increasingly embracing influencer culture.

Why Robert Downey Jr.’s comments reflect Hollywood’s growing debate around stardom

From Cannes Film Festival red carpets to The Academy Awards — major award shows, premieres, and fashion events — influencers are now regularly being invited into spaces that were once reserved almost exclusively for actors, filmmakers, and industry veterans.

Major streaming platforms, studios, and brands have increasingly pivoted to creator-driven marketing strategies, relying on online reach and built-in fanbases to amplify projects globally.

Robert Downey Jr.’s opinion carries particular weight because of the role he himself played in building the modern blockbuster era through the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite having over 58 million Instagram followers and understanding the crucial importance of digital visibility, the actor admitted on the podcast that he tries not to go “too deep down the rabbit hole."

How excited are you all to see him back in the MCU with Doomsday releasing this December? Let us know in the comments.
