Amongst everything, playing stealthily might be Marvel Studios' new skill. Despite Steve Rogers handing the baton over to someone else, the Russo Brothers have different plans for him.

Captain America was the very first Avenger, and the directors plan on maintaining that. With Avengers: Doomsday dropping on December 18, 2026, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have re-recruited Steve Rogers to maybe save the world again.

"It was always going to come back to this," they shared on their Instagram. The revelation in the film's first teaser, however, comes unsurprisingly and expectedly for the fans.

The confirmation comes as a complete one-eighty from the Captain America actor's words. In early 2025, Chris Evans had denied his re-involvement in the Avengers franchise, per Anthony Mackie's 2025 Esquire profile.

Chris Evans may have been adamant about not returning, but Marvel Studios had been hard at work as well.

Avengers: Doomsday Steve Rogers-less cast

Avengers: Doomsday has dived into production by mid-2025. Along with the kickstart, the audience had received an elaborate spectacle for a cast reveal.

Marvel Studios had orchestrated a 5.5-hour-long livestream that shifted from chair to chair. The setting revealed everyone but Chris Evans from the lineup. To try and complicate things, Anthony Mackie, the new Captain America, had been unveiled as well.

Steve Rogers' return now stands facing the earlier strong denials. With Chris Evans' undeniable presence in the latest teaser, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are headstrong in their belief in the first Avenger.
