Inside the buzzing corridors of Sony Pictures Animation, big swings are quietly becoming routine. Executives debate risk like artists debate color palettes, weighing theatrical bets against streaming dominance. After reshaping superhero animation once, the studio is preparing another calculated expansion. And this time, two fan-favorite rebels stand at the center.

Sony Pictures Animation has officially placed standalone Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen animated films into active development.

“I’m not allowed to say. But we are active on both,” Kristine Belson said to Hollywood Reporter.

The confirmation cements both characters as priority franchise extensions beyond the core Spider-Verse trilogy, not experimental side projects.

The studio is simultaneously advancing Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for June 18, 2027, while shaping these spinoffs as separate theatrical-scale productions, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Development discussions include creative teams, visual direction, and long-term franchise planning to ensure each film builds a distinct identity within the multiverse rather than echoing the trilogy’s established aesthetic.

While the multiverse expands outward with Gwen and Hobie, Sony is fortifying its broader slate for a sustained animation takeover.

Sony accelerates its family animation expansion plan

Beyond superhero territory, Sony is preparing the theatrical release of GOAT, a $80 million basketball-themed feature produced by Stephen Curry and starring Caleb McLaughlin.

The studio is also developing Buds for March 2027 and advancing Wish Dragon 2 for summer 2027, reinforcing its family-focused theatrical pipeline.

On the streaming front, a sequel to KPop: Demon Hunters remains in early development, with leadership indicating a 2029 timeline would be optimistic.

Additional projects include Motel Transylvania, Ghostbusters animation expansion, and new original features aimed at diversifying audiences across age groups and global markets.
