Sony has spent $475 million to tighten its grip on the Peanuts franchise, one of the most beloved cartoon universes ever created. The Japanese entertainment giant has acquired majority ownership of the Peanuts franchise, the home of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and decades worth of cultural gold. A deal of this size does not happen without a very calculated plan hiding behind those round-headed characters.

Sony purchased WildBrain's 41% stake in Peanuts Holdings LLC for approximately $457 million, bringing its total ownership to 80%. The Schulz family retains the remaining 20%, ensuring the legacy of creator Charles Schulz stays protected. The deal officially closed around March 2026, following regulatory approvals that gave Sony full consolidated control of Peanuts Holdings LLC.

WildBrain, despite selling its stake, remains a key production partner, continuing to develop new Peanuts content exclusively for Apple TV+. The company also retains its licensing responsibilities across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific territories, keeping its footprint firmly within the franchise. Sony's expansion blueprint covers film, television, gaming, music, consumer products, and live experiences worldwide.

Sony's history with Peanuts actually dates to 2018, when Sony Music Entertainment Japan first acquired roughly 39% of the franchise for around $185 million. That initial stake was a deliberate opening move in a longer ownership strategy, not a passing interest. Seven years of brand familiarity and licensing experience gave Sony the confidence to spend another $457 million completing the picture. The groundwork was laid long before the headlines arrived.

As Snoopy prepares for his Sony-powered global era, the company has been signing equally ambitious deals across the broader entertainment landscape.

Sony's bigger IP shopping spree goes well beyond Peanuts

Peanuts is far from Sony's only recent acquisition. In July 2025, Sony secured a 2.5% stake in Bandai Namco for $464 million, unlocking access to iconic gaming and anime properties, including Pac-Man and Tekken. Around the same period, Sony raised its stake in Kadokawa Corporation, home of FromSoftware, to 10% for approximately $320 million, cementing a serious foothold in Japanese IP.

Sony Music Publishing separately announced a staggering $3.5 billion deal to acquire a 45,000-song catalog featuring music from Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna. Taken together, every major Sony move points toward one unmistakable ambition: building the most dominant entertainment IP portfolio on the planet. Peanuts, with its 75 years of cultural staying power, serves as the most nostalgic and emotionally resonant piece of that rapidly growing puzzle.
