The 21st century's relentless reach for the comfort of streaming was bound to create a situation for inflation. Music streaming giant Spotify is no stranger to it either.
As the new year settles in, the Swedish music streaming service Spotify has raised its goals by a dollar. In a release on January 15, the streamer shared its price hike amid more involvement in video content and podcasts in partnership with Netflix.
Starting in February, the streamer is going to charge its individual premium users $12.99. This price hike will be implemented in the United States, Estonia, and Latvia.
The increased prices also come with the platform trying to attract more small creators, as per The Hollywood Reporter's coverage. Prices for the Duo, Family, and Students plans will now be $18.99, $21.99, and $6.99, respectively.
Netflix and Spotify's alliance brings a significant shift in the monopoly over audio-video content.
What is the Netflix-Spotify deal?
In October 2025, Netflix announced its partnership with Spotify, which aimed to amplify video format podcasts on its platform. This will create a select mix-up of shows and podcasts on both platforms.
Some of the podcasts revealed to be exchanged were The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Zach Lowe Show, The Rewatchables, and Dissect, amongst others, as per Netflix Tudum. The deal is said to gain momentum in the early months of 2026.
Spotify's price hike is an attempt on the platform's part to balance the quality of the content it offers with the abundance of it. According to them, their more dedicated users are not likely to be phased by these hikes.
