The red carpet of the winners has not rolled out yet, but some nominations could feel like wins themselves. Stellan Skarsgård, whether he bags a statuette or not, has his Oscar nomination do just that.

Sentimental Value has swept the Oscar nominations with several of them tucked under its belt till the main ceremony. And Stellan Skarsgård, who played Gustav Borg, on the other hand, has not only received a nomination, but also pioneered one.

The 74-year-old actor has been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor category for Sentimental Value. Simultaneously, he has become the first actor from an international film to receive an Oscar nomination in the category.

Skarsgård is also a first-time Oscar nominee with this announcement. He is joined by Jacob Elordi, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Delroy Lindi.

Skarsgård's role in Sentimental Value, receiving this slight prestige, is nothing if not justified to the fullest.

Sentimental Value was released through various film festivals starting in May 2025 and in theatres by November. Stellan Skarsgård donned the role of Gustav Borg, a filmmaker who nurses a fractured bond with his two daughters, Nora and Agnes.

The film sails past the traumas of generations before Gustav, Nora, and Agnes find their places within a world that is not marred by anger towards their family. The connection Skarsgård's Gustav holds with filmmaking could also be seen playing a make-or-break role in his and his daughters' healing.

Sentimental Value has, in turn, added value to Stellan Skarsgård's legacy and an Oscar nomination. Now, whether the veteran actor receives a full-circle end to his nomination or not, the tag of firsts remains attached to this selection.
