One might naturally expect Sydney Sweeney’s usual allure to have paved her way to Christy. Closer inspection, however, might reveal a path far more devotional than usual for the actress and former boxing legend to have met on screen.

Christy’s script, it turns out, had punched Sweeney harder than boxing gloves ever could.

Sydney Sweeney revealed her straight, yet teary path to playing Christy Martin in her recent film Christy. While it was a call and confirm, Sweeney shared that the script's profound impact on her could have altered even her identity, had she not gotten to participate.

“I will do anything for you. I will lose myself,” she recalled saying to David Michôd, the director of Christy, on Variety. 

“I got on a Zoom with the director, begging him,” she disclosed. The weight of Christy Martin’s journey had stirred an intense desire in Sweeney to portray the middleweight boxer. 

What had taken the actress by surprise even more than the script's moving, reality-based premise was her unawareness of Christy Martin herself.

“I couldn’t believe that I had no idea who this woman was,” she revealed on Variety, as if in remorse. Her reaction and ample recorded vigour to transform for the role, however, seem to have sufficed for this. 

Christy may have been Sydney Sweeney’s biopic debut, but her boxing origin story dates far before her acting gig.

Training for Christy had actually reignited Sydney Sweeney’s love for physical challenge. The actress was tasked with working out twice daily in order to gain 35 pounds enough for the role.

Having grown up Kickboxing, the process had come naturally to Sweeney. So much so that she was even compelled to pick up the sport as a profession, discontinuing her current career path. 

“I think I might quit acting and start boxing,” she recalled having thought.
