SZA has revealed she was formally diagnosed with high-functioning autism, surprising fans across social media. The singer shared the update, mixing raw honesty with her signature humor, keeping the tone light despite the weight of the news. The reveal quickly became one of her most talked-about personal admissions yet.
SZA confirmed she was formally diagnosed with what she called Asperger's, also known as high-functioning autism. The revelation arrived unannounced through her burner Instagram account, catching followers completely off guard. She kept the tone light despite the weight of the disclosure.
"Finally took the time n got formally diagnosed .. asbergers / high functioning autism / smarter than u n**** so stop playing in my face cause pattern recognition told me and I WILL get to the bottom if it thanks," she wrote on @notmusicatalliswear.
SZA then added, "pretty sure this is why I'm taking Ai so personally btw lol. And also why I'm in every comment section," explaining her recent online behavior through this new lens.
This marks the first time SZA has used the word formal when describing this diagnosis, even though hints have surfaced before on her burner account, @notmusicatalliswear. Autism spectrum disorder is the accurate clinical term today, since Asperger syndrome was folded into that broader category years ago. Many adults receive similar diagnoses later in life, often bringing unexpected clarity to old patterns and habits. Her decision to frame something so personal with humor fits a pattern she has followed for years.
While pattern recognition helped SZA crack her own code, it turns out she had already been decoding her mind for years.
Long before autism reveal, SZA already battled anxiety and depression
Long before the Asperger syndrome diagnosis, SZA had already been candid about anxiety that she described as debilitating at times. She once left a major awards ceremony early, citing overwhelming discomfort with crowds and attention. The singer has also spoken about depression and moments of self-loathing tied to industry pressure and constant online scrutiny.
She previously called the music business psychosis inducing, pointing to the exhaustion that fame brings both mentally and physically. SZA has leaned on exercise, prayer, and songwriting as coping tools during difficult stretches. Taken together, her latest disclosure adds another layer to a story she has been telling honestly all along.
