Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's black-tie wedding at Madison Square Garden was filled with familiar faces, but one celebrity played a far more significant role than simply attending the celebration. The surprise came not from the guest list, but from the person standing at the altar.

The couple chose actor and comedian Adam Sandler to officiate their wedding on July 3, adding an unexpected Hollywood touch to one of the year's most talked-about celebrity ceremonies.

Sandler officiated the ceremony as a close friend of the couple as reported by PEOPLE. His connection to Kelce grew after the Kansas City Chiefs star appeared in the 2025 comedy Happy Gilmore 2, while his admiration for Swift has been well documented in recent years.

Swift and Kelce also broke from traditional wedding conventions by skipping a formal bridal party. Instead, Swift's brother, Austin Swift, served as her Man of Honor, while Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, stood beside him as Best Man during the ceremony held at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

As PEOPLE confirmed, apart Sandler officiating the wedding, Swift and Kelce also broke from traditional wedding conventions by skipping a formal bridal party. Instead, Swift's brother, Austin Swift, served as her Man of Honor, while Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, stood beside him as Best Man during the ceremony held at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Sandler's role in the ceremony also reflects friendships he has built with both newlyweds, making his involvement feel like more than just a celebrity cameo.

Adam Sandler's friendship with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce goes back years

Long before officiating the wedding, Adam Sandler had spoken publicly about being a fan of Taylor Swift. After attending the Los Angeles premiere of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film with his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, he later admitted that Swift was one of the few celebrities who made him nervous because of how much she meant to his family.

The comedian has also shared a personal connection to Swift's music. Speaking with Billboard in 2024, Sandler said 'The Best Day' became a favorite in his household, recalling that he and his daughters had listened to every new Swift album together from the day each one was released.

His friendship with Travis Kelce developed through Happy Gilmore 2, where the NFL star made a cameo appearance. While promoting the film, Sandler praised Kelce as "a great actor and a great human," adding that working with him reminded him of the close friends he grew up with.

Those relationships ultimately made Sandler an unexpected yet fitting choice to officiate one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year, bringing together two friendships that had grown well before the couple exchanged vows.

Were you surprised to learn Adam Sandler officiated Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding, or did his friendship with the couple make him the perfect choice? Let us know in the comments!
