The marketing run of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has been around how this is the toughest movie not only in the director’s career but also for the actors involved in the project. This positioning of the movie on top of the fact that it is a Nolan movie has generated unprecedented hype for the movie. And this became more evident recently when the ticket presales suffered technical glitches due to the overwhelming demand.

Tickets for The Odyssey went on sale on June 4th at noon. The influx of potential buyers seems to have overloaded ticketing servers almost instantly. There have been reports of delays and issues with the AMC, Fandango, and Regal websites. According to some reports, sales lines reached hours-long delays even after the issues were resolved. This, in turn, led to a surge in the price of secondary ticket postings up to $1000 at sites like eBay (via Forbes).

At 12 p.m. EDT, tickets for the much-awaited film went live on AMC; however, the queue was halted by AMC during the first 30 minutes of the drop because moviegoers likely swarmed the website. Shortly after tickets were available, downdetector.com users reported a rise in issues with AMC and Fandango. Users on X also experienced issues with the purchase process. On the AMC website, which seems to have resumed regular operations after the early hours of the sale, wait times for tickets exceeded an hour.

The expensive tickets on eBay are mostly for The Odyssey's IMAX 70mm showing. The format is several times larger than typical displays and offers three times the resolution of regular 35mm film. Additionally, the film adaptation of Homer's epic is the first feature film to be shot entirely on an IMAX camera. This means that, in contrast to films that are partially shot with an IMAX camera and alternate between multiple aspect ratios, screenings of the film will remain the same ratio throughout.

The presales demand demonstrates just how insane the buzz around the movie is, which is touted to be a big box office disruptor and a major award season contender.

The Odyssey eyes commercial and critical success

Given that Christopher Nolan's previous feature, Oppenheimer, brought in $975 million at the box office worldwide and 7 Oscars, it is anticipated that this film will make hundreds of millions of dollars. With a stellar ensemble that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya.

Nolan is a well-known supporter of IMAX and frequently urges viewers to see his movies in the format if at all possible. Hence, the overpowering demand for IMAX tickets online. With a $250 million production budget, the movie opens in theaters on July 17. The epic adaptation of Homer's poem about Odysseus' return home is being distributed by Universal.
