Netflix’s plan to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery is stirring buzz from Hollywood to Washington. President Donald Trump is watching closely, but Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos hints that what happens next could reshape the streaming world entirely.

Ted Sarandos made it clear that Donald Trump’s attention on the Netflix-Warner Bros. merger is no cause for concern.

“He’s made no indication that he’s going to do anything or be involved in any way that’s improper. This is the DOJ’s deal,” Sarandos told Variety at the DGA Awards.

He emphasized that regulatory oversight remains fully independent and unaffected by political interest. Netflix intends to follow all legal procedures while ensuring the merger benefits consumers and the industry.

Sarandos also told Variety that Trump has a strong grasp of the entertainment industry and genuinely cares about its overall health, particularly when it comes to American jobs. He emphasized that the President’s role is purely observational and does not interfere with the merger process.

While Trump’s curiosity grabs headlines, Sarandos’ calm assurance signals that regulatory rules, not politics, will shape the outcome.

Regulatory scrutiny intensifies as Netflix seeks Warner Bros. studios and streaming assets

As of February 2026, the merger is under intense regulatory scrutiny. Netflix aims to acquire Warner Bros.’ studios and streaming divisions, while spinning off linear cable networks.

The Department of Justice has subpoenaed competitors to evaluate antitrust risks, and a Senate subcommittee hearing in early February tested Ted Sarandos on market concentration concerns and the competitive landscape against players like YouTube.

Netflix’s all-cash offer of $27.75 per share is still recommended by the Warner Bros. Discovery board despite higher hostile bids from Paramount Skydance.

If approved by regulators and shareholders, the merger could close in late 2026 or early 2027, consolidating major franchises including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and the DC Universe under Netflix’s umbrella.
