At the 79th Cannes Film Festival press conference for The Beloved (El ser querido), Javier Bardem addressed whether his outspoken support for Palestine had left him worried about being quietly sidelined in Hollywood. The Spanish performer admitted the fear certainly exists, particularly after publicly criticizing the war in Gaza. Still, Bardem made clear that personal conviction outweighs professional comfort for him now.

“The fear does exist, granted that one has to do things, even if you feel a bit scared or afraid,” he explained. Javier Bardem stressed that remaining truthful to himself mattered more than protecting his career from possible repercussions. The Academy Award winner credited his mother for shaping that outlook, adding that there was “no plan B” when it came to speaking openly about humanitarian issues.

Despite industry speculation surrounding potential backlash, Javier Bardem insisted his career has hardly collapsed behind the scenes. The actor noted that he has continued receiving offers from the United States, Europe, South America, and Spain, even after appearing at the 2026 Academy Awards.
