Bridging the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is not the only thing the new The Lord of the Rings movie will do. As the characters set to explore through the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood to protect the One Ring, two iconic actors are expected to reprise their roles.

Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are reprising their original roles in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The news was primarily revealed through a surprise announcement by Sir Ian McKellen himself at a fan convention in August 2025. This marked the first confirmation of their return to Middle-earth.

"There is a character in the movie called Frodo, and there is another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!" declared McKellen at the convention. Elijah Wood's presence there also cemented the claim.

Later at a panel appearance at DesertCon in October 2025, Elijah Wood revealed that he had read the script. He was particularly excited about the return of the iconic trio  Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens.

Wood further promised that the film will involve many of the same production designers from the original trilogy. Making fans even more excited for Gandalf and Frodo's return.

In fact, Gandalf and Frodo’s comeback is such a hook, the plot could take a vacation.
