Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is still more than a month away from hitting theaters, but the filmmaker's latest epic is already making waves across the box office landscape. Anticipation for the film has steadily grown since tickets went on sale, with fans rushing to secure seats for premium screenings.

The excitement surrounding the project has translated into a major milestone for theater chains. With a star-studded cast, Nolan's reputation for delivering theatrical spectacles, and limited IMAX 70mm screenings, demand has reached extraordinary levels.

According to AMC CEO Adam Aron, The Odyssey generated the highest first-day ticket sales for any major studio-released movie at AMC since 2022. The achievement was driven largely by premium-format advance sales, particularly for IMAX 70mm screenings, which sold at a pace unmatched by other studio titles over the past four years.

The presale rush was so intense that AMC's website and app experienced long virtual queues and temporary outages. Similar slowdowns were reported across other ticketing platforms as moviegoers scrambled to secure seats. The only AMC titles to outperform The Odyssey's first-day sales since 2022 were the theater chain's own event films, including Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Beyoncé's Renaissance concert movie.

The strong response is not just about Christopher Nolan's name. Interest in the film has also been fueled by the scale of its production and the dedication of its cast, particularly Matt Damon, who underwent a dramatic physical transformation to bring the legendary hero Odysseus to life.

Matt Damon details the transformation and challenges for The Odyssey

While ticket sales continue to soar, The Odyssey cast underwent their own demanding journey behind the scenes. Leading man Matt Damon committed to an extensive physical transformation to portray the legendary Greek hero Odysseus. Speaking on the New Heights podcast in January, Damon revealed the rigorous preparation required for the role.

"I haven't been that light since high school," he said. "So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet."

Matt Damon, the movie's lead, said he weighed 167 pounds during filming, significantly below his usual weight range of 185 to 200 pounds. Beyond the physical challenge, the actor endured a grueling 91-day production schedule that took the cast across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and studio locations in the United States.

The actor also praised co-stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, expressing admiration for how they handle global fame while maintaining professionalism and focus throughout the demanding shoot.

As The Odyssey moves closer to its July 2026 release, its record-breaking presales highlight the immense anticipation surrounding Nolan's adaptation of Homer's classic tale. Whether that enthusiasm translates into a massive opening weekend remains to be seen, but the film has already secured one impressive box office victory before its debut.
