Long before her life became intertwined with America’s most famous political dynasty, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was steadily carving out a promising future at Calvin Klein in the early 1990s, building a formidable reputation in fashion PR. Yet just as her career reached its peak, she abruptly stepped away from the industry in 1996 shortly after marrying John F. Kennedy Jr., leaving many wondering what prompted her exit at the height of her success.
Known for styling high-profile figures like Annette Bening and Diane Sawyer, Bessette seemed destined for an even bigger future in fashion. But her path shifted after she began dating Kennedy Jr. in 1994 and later married the founder of George Magazine. According to Kennedy Jr.’s longtime friend Sasha Chermayeff, leaving Calvin Klein was closely tied to the demands of that new life as her fashion role increasingly overlapped with her husband’s growing public profile.
“She left her job basically because everything had to revolve around John and George magazine,” Chermayeff told Page Six.
Chermayeff further shared that Kennedy was expected to give up everything to make John F. Kennedy Jr.’s career moves more acceptable to the world, adding about women's lives in the 1990s.
"She was supposed to sort of give up everything in order to make his career moves more palatable for the world, and I feel sad about it,” Chermayeff added.
While Bessette was from the fashion industry, her early roots and education were far from the field.
Inside Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s beginnings in the field of fashion
After graduating in elementary education from Boston University’s School of Education in 1988, Bessette began as a sales associate at Calvin Klein in Massachusetts. Her talent quickly caught the attention of company executives, earning her a transfer to the brand’s New York flagship store, where she began styling high-profile clients and rapidly climbed the ranks.
Her rise eventually led to the role of director of show productions, working closely with designer Calvin Klein himself.
That chapter of her life has resurfaced in the FX/Hulu biographical drama Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, which premiered on February 12, 2026, streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Produced by Ryan Murphy, the ongoing series traces the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. In the series, Bessette-Kennedy is portrayed by Sarah Pidgeon, while Kennedy Jr. is played by Paul Anthony Kelly.
