Stranger Things appeared weary of ruling Netflix alone and cast its gaze toward theaters. The final season debuted with nearly 60 million views in five days, record-breaking by any measure. Naturally, the theatrical farewell now expects another triumph.
The Stranger Things series finale has already crossed 1.1 million RSVPs, according to Ross Duffer on his Instagram handle, signaling unprecedented theatrical demand. The fan event was announced in late October with screenings planned across 350 theaters. By early December, reservations expanded rapidly.
That expansion grew from 500 locations to more than 620 theaters across the United States and Canada. Screenings are scheduled for December 31, 2025 and January 1, 2026. The finale now spans over 3,500 showtimes nationwide.
Availability remains uneven across markets, with Los Angeles still showing multiple nearly full listings. The finale is screening beyond AMC, Regal, and Cinemark. Additional chains include Harkins, Megaplex, Cineplex, Alamo, and Landmark.
These theatrical audiences will be excluded from Stranger Things Season Five Netflix viewership totals. The season is still expected to exceed 100 million views within ninety days.
With over a million RSVPs already secured, it raises the question of whether the Stranger Things finale is poised to dominate the box office next.
Can the Stranger Things finale turn into a box office hit?
While the Stranger Things finale is poised to be a massive cultural event on December 31, 2025, it cannot become a traditional box office hit. The reason is structural, not demand-driven. The event involves theatrical screenings, not a theatrical release.
According to deadline, due to the deal between Netflix and most theater chains, AMC and Cinemark are not selling traditional tickets. Instead, fans pay a reservation fee around twenty dollars. That amount is immediately converted into concession vouchers for food and drinks.
Because the reservation fee goes entirely toward concessions, exhibitors retain the revenue. No box office gross is reported to tracking agencies. Consequently, no official box office number can exist for the finale.
The finale drops simultaneously on Netflix at 5:00 PM Pacific Time and 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Streaming performance remains the primary success metric. This occurs despite over 1.1 million RSVPs and 3,500 sold-out showtimes.
