“Timothée Chalamet Had the Nerve” — Doja Cat Throws Major Shade Over Oscar Nominee’s Ballet Take

Debate over artistic respect reignited after remarks from Timothée Chalamet drew criticism. As ballet and opera institutions defended their traditions, performers joined the conversation online. Among the most vocal responses came from Doja Cat, whose reaction quickly intensified the clash.

Doja Cat directly mocked Timothée Chalamet over his comments about ballet and opera, accusing him of dismissing art forms that demand years of dedication.

“Timothée Chalamet had the nerve, big guy by the way, had the nerve to say on camera that nobody cares about it,” she said in a reaction posted on her TikTok, immediately pushing back against the idea that audiences no longer value these historic performance traditions.

She continued by highlighting the culture and commitment behind classical performance. “There is etiquette around ballet. It's an amazing theater medium. And people go there every day to the dance studio. Dancers show up 8am, 6am, whatever the f---, they show up, and they break, and they b---- every single day just because they have respect for it,” she explained.

Doja Cat also emphasized in her TikTok that artistic industries often face struggles without losing public appreciation. “Your industry has a tough time. My industry has a tough time, does not mean people do not care about it,” she added, making her frustration with the comment unmistakably clear.

Criticism surged after Oscar nominee Chalamet argued that ballet and opera no longer resonate with audiences today, a remark some analysts believe may have dented his Oscar chances.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares anymore,’” he said during a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas in February 2026.

While institutions defended their traditions, a wave of artists and performers stepped forward, amplifying criticism beyond music reactions.

Backlash widens beyond Doja Cat over Timothée Chalamet’s comments

Several prominent figures also challenged the statement by Timothée Chalamet publicly. Jamie Lee Curtis questioned why artists criticize other art forms, while Grammy-winning opera star Isabel Leonard called the remark narrow-minded.

Ballet leaders, including Sara Mearns and Megan Fairchild, also challenged the actor’s understanding of the discipline and its centuries-old cultural significance.

Adding irony is Chalamet’s family background in ballet. His mother, Nicole Flender, performed with the New York City Ballet, and his sister, Pauline Chalamet, trained in dance. Critics say dismissing ballet’s relevance overlooks a tradition closely tied to his upbringing.
