Timothée Chalamet, Lionel Messi, and Bad Bunny have unexpectedly joined forces for adidas’ latest football campaign — and the result looks more like an Oscar-winning short film than a traditional sports commercial.

Titled Backyard Legends, the five-minute short film arrives ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and follows Chalamet assembling a team of football superstars to take down an undefeated local street crew whose winning streak supposedly stretches back decades.

The cinematic campaign also features major football names, including Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, Trinity Rodman, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, and Alessandro Del Piero, blending multiple generations of football icons into one exaggerated street football fantasy.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Mark Molloy, the short film has already exploded online, reportedly crossing more than 10 million views across social media platforms within its first 24 hours.

The campaign heavily leans into nostalgia, combining 90s street football aesthetics, old-school terrace culture, analog visuals, and stylized CGI while pushing adidas’ “You Got This” message centered around freedom, confidence, and joy in sport.

As fans pour in love, what makes Backyard Legends so iconic?

Why adidas’ celebrity crossover film is getting so much attention online?

Part of what makes Backyard Legends stand out is how unexpectedly broad the crossover feels. Instead of focusing purely on football, adidas combines Hollywood, music, internet culture, and multiple eras of the sport into one chaotic cinematic universe.

Timothée Chalamet acts as the emotional anchor of the story, narrating the myth surrounding the unbeatable local trio while recruiting football legends and celebrities to finally challenge them.

"I used to dream of playing with these guys…I love this game, so it’s unbelievable to be doing this with adidas, captured with the best to ever do it," Chalamet said while discussing the campaign with adidas.

Between its cinematic writing, stylized direction, nostalgic soundtrack, and emotionally charged storytelling, Backyard Legends feels so unique and yet incredibly relatable at the same time. Director Mark Molloy approaches the campaign with the scale and seriousness of a prestige movie, while Chalamet’s fully committed performance helps ground the fantasy inside something surprisingly immersive.

Would you watch a full-length football movie starring Timothée Chalamet, Messi, and Bad Bunny after this crossover? Let us know in the comments.
