Tori Spelling has opened up about a raw, emotional moment Hilary Swank experienced behind the scenes of Beverly Hills, 90210. The two-time Oscar winner was once convinced her career was finished, and the reason traces back to a single unexpected meeting with a producer. What Spelling witnessed that day is a reminder that rejection can quietly redirect a destiny.
Hilary Swank was fired from Beverly Hills, 90210 after just 16 episodes in its eighth season, and the news left her devastated. She had been cast as Carly Reynolds, a single mother and love interest for Steve Sanders, initially signed for two years. Producer Paul Waigner called her in without warning.
"She comes into my dressing room, we shut the door, and she said, 'I just got let go. I am being fired from the show,'" Tori Spelling said on the 90210MG podcast.
She then added that Swank was worrying out loud, saying, "Oh my God, if I get fired off of 90210, I am never going to make it," emphasizing just how shattered Swank felt in that moment.
That fear proved to be completely unfounded. Two months after her exit, she auditioned for Boys Don't Cry, playing Brandon Teena, a real-life trans man in rural Nebraska, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2000. She then won again in 2005 for Million Dollar Baby, playing Maggie Fitzgerald, an underdog waitress who rises to become a professional boxer before a tragic accident reshapes her entire fight.
While Hilary Swank was building an Oscar legacy, she was also quietly building a future far bigger than any television contract could have held.
Hilary Swank is now gearing up for major projects
Hilary Swank is currently in production on Speed Girl, portraying Janet Guthrie, the first woman to qualify for both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. She is also producing the project, which centers on Guthrie’s groundbreaking journey in motorsports. Alongside it, a film adaptation of Postscript is in development, with Swank expected to reprise Holly Kennedy, navigating grief and life.
At 51, Swank is also navigating a full personal life. She and husband Philip Schneider, married for eight years, welcomed twins Ohm and Aya in 2023, and the three-year-olds now travel with her to film sets. She has also launched a wellness partnership focused on fitness for mothers. The woman who once wept in a dressing room, fearing the end of her career, is now producing her own stories and rewriting what a second act in Hollywood can look like.
