UFC 329 arrived with massive hype, a long-awaited Conor McGregor comeback, and a rematch that had fans expecting chaos, drama, and maybe a classic. McGregor had not fought in years, Max Holloway came in battle-tested, and the buildup around the Paramount+ main event felt enormous.

All anticipation vanished quickly as the night’s biggest storyline fizzled almost immediately at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC 329 on Paramount+ turned into a brutal shock for Conor McGregor, as Max Holloway stopped him with a first-round TKO in just 69 seconds.

McGregor opened with a jumping kick, but appeared to injure his right leg on landing, and the problem only worsened as the fight continued. He fell multiple times while trying to reset and even looked unable to plant cleanly, which made Holloway more aggressive and the referee more alert.

The bout was halted after the official saw McGregor could not continue, with the stoppage recorded at 1:09 of round one. For a fighter returning after five years away, it was a nightmare result and a reminder that one bad step can change everything in seconds.

McGregor’s latest setback also dragged up the injury history that has followed him since UFC 264.

Conor McGregor's familiar leg problem

Conor McGregor’s latest setback also dragged up the injury history that has followed him since UFC 264. In that 2021 fight against Dustin Poirier, he broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg after replays showed his ankle rolling awkwardly as he stepped back near the end of the first round.

The injury had already cast a long shadow over this return, and reports before UFC 329 noted that McGregor had dealt with microfractures and even used a protective boot during training. So when his leg gave way again here, it felt less like a random twist and more like an old vulnerability returning at the worst possible moment. Holloway did what elite fighters do and capitalized immediately, while McGregor was left once again facing questions about his durability.

What did you think of McGregor’s return and the way it ended? Let us know in the comments.
