Mackie, a designer of high heels and high camp for 60 years, found all the sequins and sparkle he could want on Hollywood's red carpets, as well as on the set of "The Carol Burnett Show" and when his archives found their fresh audience of young stars like Zendaya and Miley Cyrus.

He had been battling advanced myopathy, a muscle disease that limited his movement and strength. He died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, his manager, Don Pickett, told The New York Times.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today," read a post on his Instagram account. "His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."

Mackie was famous for his affinity for all things sequined and glittery, and celebrities such as Diana Ross, Cher and even the "Mickey Mouse Club" star Sabrina Carpenter sought him out for his couture over decades in Tinseltown.

Cher wore the revealing outfits Mackie designed throughout her career on stage, at awards shows and in music videos, often aglow with myriad sequins. Mackie earned a Tony Award for best costume design for Cher's musical "The Cher Show."

On Monday, the star (real name: Cherilyn Sarkisian) paid tribute to her friend in a post to X, writing, "My dear Bob has gone up to heaven. Knowing him, he's bringing sequins, beads and his sketch pad. Good nite sweet Prince."

Born in 1939 in Monterey Park, California, Mackie started out as an apprentice for the Hollywood costume designer Jean Louis, sketching the dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to provocatively sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.

Diana Ross, Madonna, Bette Midler were among the many celebrities Mackie dressed in his illustrious career, which the Times noted "included several years working for studios and boutiques that catered to rich women, and a brief flirtation with the fashion industry."
