Weird Al Yankovic Turns Down “Nice Pile of Money” to Avoid AI Association

Hollywood still seems to be grappling with the AI debate. The industry is still split on its long-term implications for an industry that heavily relies on human creativity and emotions. Some major names in Hollywood have already made their stance clear on the use of AI. However, there is one name who has not only rejected AI for the entertainment industry but for every other prospect possible.

Weird Al Yankovic, a comedian and musician, recently revealed that he declined a "nice pile of money" to be in an advertisement for an AI software company. In addition to making sure that every piece of software on Earth has a button or obtrusive pop-up, AI businesses have another method of imposing their planet-heating technologies on the world. Celebrities are paid enormous sums of money to promote their goods.

In an interview published on Monday, June 29, the Grammy winner told Syracuse.com that he is "not a fan of AI." He was offered a sizable amount of money for a commercial just before his Bigger & Weirder tour. However, he pulled out of the advertisement once he found out that it was for an AI company.

“I said, ‘Oh well, yeah, sure, I could do that.’ And then a week before we’re supposed to shoot it, I find out this is AI. And I thought, ‘Oh no, I can’t be the poster boy for AI, forget it.’ So I felt bad about kind of pulling out at the last minute. But yeah, I’m not down with that,” said Weird Al Yankovic.

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey have been featured in Super Bowl commercials for Salesforce's agentic AI technologies in recent months. Martin Scorsese has also starred in a publicity campaign and pitch for FLUX. It is a gen-AI image program that he claims would enable him to storyboard his films without hiring human artists.

There are, however, those who have rejected the influence of AI on cinema.

Celebrities on the other side of the table

AI has been described as "genuinely harmful" by Backrooms director Kane Parsons. While Emma Thompson claims the technology has caused "intense irritation" in her creative process. In an interview that was released last week, Madonna also stated to Vogue Italia that AI and algorithms are incompatible with how artists ought to create art.

Over the course of his more than 40-year career, Weird Al Yankovic has put out multiple albums and made appearances in a number of cult movies, such as The Naked Gun, UHF, and Bill & Ted Face The Music. Daniel Radcliffe starred in a comic biography about his life. While investors and CEOs are racing to invest in the AI bubble, the technology's drawbacks are taking longer to become apparent.
