Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, has stirred quiet curiosity among cinephiles worldwide. Initially celebrated for its ambitious concept, it now faces unexpected scrutiny from tech mogul Elon Musk, who has taken a keen interest and shared his opinion about Nolan regarding the film.

On Sunday morning, an X user claimed that casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy would contradict Homer’s original depiction from 700 BCE. They noted that Helen was described as fair-skinned, blonde, and possessing beauty so extraordinary it sparked a legendary war. Seeing this, Musk commented on the post later on.

“Chris Nolan has lost his integrity,” Musk responded sharply. His comments focused on the director’s approach to the story. The discussion highlighted Musk’s disapproval and drew attention to the film’s controversial direction.

Variety reported a collaboration between Lupita Nyong’o and Christopher Nolan in November 2024. The project was revealed the following December to be Nolan’s film, The Odyssey, but Nyong’o’s role has not yet been officially confirmed.

The ensemble cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Elliot Page. The film promises to bring together a star-studded lineup for a modern epic retelling.

The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the legendary Greek King of Ithaca, on a perilous journey home. He faces dangerous challenges and encounters mythical beings that test his courage and wit. Among these are the monstrous Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchanting sirens, and the powerful witch-goddess Circe. 

Every encounter threatens to derail his mission to return to Ithaca. Throughout the epic, Odysseus struggles to reunite with his loyal wife, Penelope, while navigating treachery, temptation, and the unforgiving whims of the gods.

Universal Pictures will release The Odyssey theatrically in the United States on July 17, 2026. The studio will show the film in IMAX, IMAX 70 mm, and other premium large formats. Tickets for select IMAX 70 mm screenings went on sale a year early and sold out rapidly. 

Industry experts predict record-breaking box office success. While the plot and epic journey raise tremendous excitement, its casting choices have Elon Musk targeting Christopher Nolan, drawing attention across the industry.
