According to Deadline, Smith will lead David Gordon Green’s action-thriller as one of two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. The setup already carries the tension of a locked-room mystery wrapped inside a full-scale prison nightmare.

The project also marks a notable career pivot for the Academy Award winner. After leaning heavily on sequels and familiar franchises, Smith is finally stepping into a major original studio thriller again. That alone gives Supermax an unusual layer of curiosity, especially with Amazon MGM Studios reportedly locking worldwide rights in a deal valued around $70 million before cameras have even started rolling.

David Gordon Green directing the feature adds another unpredictable element to the mix. The filmmaker has bounced between grounded drama, strange comedy, and franchise spectacle for years, making Supermax feel difficult to pin down in the best possible way. Writers David Weil and David J. Rosen, known for the paranoia and conspiracy textures of Hunters and Invasion, seem perfectly suited for a claustrophobic federal thriller.
