Kanye West, or Ye’s performance in Albania marks the latest stop on his ongoing international concert run. The show attracted thousands of fans and had a set list that had several unscripted moments with the audience. The concert was a mix of spectacle and intimate thoughts, and became one of the night’s most talked-about moments.

When the concert was over, Ye took a moment to honor his late mother, Donda West. Then, to celebrate what would have been her birthday on July 12, he performed his 2005 song ‘Hey Mama'. There was one defining moment in the night, which was an emotional dedication, met with a heartfelt response from the crowd.

“Put your lighters up for Donda West one time,” he asked the audience, inviting the crowd to join him in a heartfelt tribute to his late mother.

His July 11 concert in Tirana was his first in Albania and one of the biggest live music events ever in the country. The show was held at the purpose-built Eagle Stadium on the Tirana-Durrës highway and was a large-scale production with immersive visuals. The event was billed as a big boost for tourism, with fans traveling from dozens of countries to attend the highly anticipated show.

Thousands of Albanian and European fans packed the purpose-built Eagle Stadium. The massive pop-up arena featured a huge stage with towering LED screens, coordinated lighting, pyrotechnics, and a giant globe centerpiece. The immersive production, which turned the open-air stadium into a theatrical environment, was a perfect counterpoint to the emotional moments of the concert.

While the concert delivered a memorable live performance, it also became the subject of a wider political controversy.

Ye's Albania concert became the center of a political funding debate

The Albanian government has defended its decision to allocate €4 million ($4.6 million) to support Ye’s concert in Tirana. It said that the funding was approved through a legal normative act and was not taken from emergency reserves or essential public services. Culture Minister Blendi Gonxhja said that the intervention was necessary when the event was in danger of cancellation.

However, the decision has been met with fierce criticism from opposition politicians, artists, and members of Albania's cultural community. Critics also pointed to Ye’s history of inflammatory public comments.

Nonetheless, Ye’s performance in Albania was memorable. The evening was wrapped up intimately. Although the Albanian government’s financial backing drew attention to the event, the poignant moment stood in stark contrast to wider conversations about the concert and its organization.

Was Ye's heartfelt finale enough to overshadow the controversy surrounding the concert? Let us know in the comments.
