Ye Earned Zero Publishing Credit on 'Through the Wire,' Original Songwriter, David Foster Confirms

David Foster confirmed Kanye West earned no publishing royalties from his breakthrough 2002 single 'Through the Wire.' Many musicians have faced brutal realities with their breakout hits’ earnings. The Beatles reportedly earned just $53 from 'Love Me Do,' while Dolly Parton saw limited upfront returns on 'Jolene'. Industry norms have long sidelined emerging artists in publishing, but David Foster’s revelation about Kanye West’s 'Through the Wire' pushes that narrative even further.

'Through the Wire' track sampled Chaka Khan's 1984 ballad 'Through the Fire,' which Foster co-wrote. Recorded days after West's near-fatal car crash with his jaw wired shut, it peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, introducing his soul-sampling style and launching The College Dropout. Despite clearances, original writers retained 100% rights.

"I wrote that song with my friend Tom Keane, and the lyrics were done by Cynthia Weil," Foster shared on the And The Writer Is... podcast. Khan's original from her platinum 'I Feel for You' album hit No. 60 on the Hot 100, becoming an Adult Contemporary staple under Foster's lush production. West sped up the sample, adding introspective bars about resilience, transforming romantic yearning into gritty triumph and earning Grammy nods for Best Rap Solo Performance.

"When Kanye's camp asked for 50 percent, I said okay. Cynthia was like, 'No, he gets nothing,'" Foster recounted. Weil's firm stance blocked any split despite West's creative overhaul, a common sampling friction where originals hold master control.

That early career setback now contrasts sharply with the challenges Kanye West faces on the global stage today.

Tour cancellations mount across Europe amid controversy

Kanye West is facing a wave of European tour cancellations as venues distance themselves from controversy. FC Basel canceled a planned June 2026 concert at St. Jakob-Park, citing a misalignment with its values. The decision followed scrutiny over Kanye West’s past remarks and related controversies.

In Poland, the Silesian Stadium scrapped a scheduled June 19 performance. Officials pointed to formal and legal concerns, while government figures emphasized that such appearances conflict with national values shaped by history. Similar setbacks have emerged in France and the United Kingdom, where planned events have either been postponed or blocked.

Despite prior public apologies, including statements addressing his behavior, the backlash has persisted. Organizers across Europe have signaled a clear stance, prioritizing ethical considerations over commercial appeal. Remaining tour dates in countries like Italy and Spain now face uncertainty as scrutiny continues.
