Yet Another Platform Bites the Dust as Paramount Quietly Retires a Streaming Service

Streaming platforms continue to reshape their strategies as media giants push toward fewer apps and larger content libraries. Paramount has been steadily reorganizing its digital services after major corporate changes and acquisitions. Another shift is now underway, and it will move a sizable catalog of programming to a new home soon.
Paramount is shutting down the standalone BET+ streaming service and moving its entire catalog to Paramount+ beginning in June.
“Beginning in June, we are expanding our reach by making Paramount+ the new home for BET+ content,” said Louis Carr in a memo, as per Deadline.
He added, “This powerful next step ensures the stories we champion, the creators we support and the culture we represent go further than ever before,” explaining that the shift will expand the reach of BET programming on a global scale.
More than 1,000 hours of series, films, specials, and originals will transfer to the Paramount+ library as part of the transition. Popular titles such as The Ms. Pat Show, All the Queen's Men, and Zatima will live inside a dedicated BET Hub within the platform.
The shift dramatically expands reach, moving content from roughly 3.5 million BET+ subscribers to Paramount+’s audience of about 80 million viewers worldwide across multiple regions and international markets.
While viewers gain a larger library in one place, the transition also sparks several structural and ownership changes.
Big changes begin for BET+ after Paramount acquires the remaining stake
As part of the consolidation, Paramount Global acquired the minority ownership stake previously held by Tyler Perry’s studio, giving the company full control of the service.
Perry will remain a key creative partner through his broader programming deal running until 2028. Existing BET+ subscribers who signed up directly through the app will be offered discounted options to transition to Paramount+ plans.
The move reflects Paramount’s broader strategy to streamline streaming operations after its merger with Skydance Media. Executives have been consolidating services to reduce costs and expand scale, similar to the earlier integration of Showtime programming into Paramount+.
Despite the shutdown of the app, BET’s television network, studios, and digital platforms will continue operating. The standalone streaming service, however, will quietly disappear.
